Relation between Rest Disturbing Factors and Situational Variables of Patient

Abstract
The subjects of the study were patients who had ability to answer the question-naire, agreed to participate in the study and had been in the hospital over one week in internal medicine units of Seoul National University Hospital between June and July, 1982.
Researchers developed a questionnaire which was designed to recognize rest dist-urbing factors and to examine respondent¢¥s situational variables-age, level of educa-tion, marital status, number of admission, number of patients in the room, and the types of disease.
The collected data were analized by computing mean and standard deviation of each patient¢¥s score given to each rest disturbing item.
1. Factors and items disturbing rest during hospitalization.
1) "The severely ill patients in the same room" caused the most disturbance among the items disturbing rest. "The fear of poor disease prognosis and treatment" was the second rest disturbing item.
2) The factor of "boredom of hospitalization" caused the most disturbance of rest. "Fear of poor disease prognosis" was the second rest-disturbing factor.
2. Relation between rest disturbing factor and subjects¢¥ situational variables
1) Age: There was significant difference between different age groups, and the factor of "poor interpersonal relationship" and the factor of "loss of role as a family member." The subjects over 26 years old were more disturbed than subject 15-25years old by poor interpersonal relationship.
2) Level of education: There was significant difference between levels of education and the factor of "loss of role as a family member" and the factor of "communication problem with medical team".
The factor "communication problem with medical team" caused more disturbance in the subjects with less than middle school education than high school graduates.
3) Marital status: There was significant difference between marital status, and the factor of "physical environment" and the factor of "loss of role as a family member".
4) Number of admission: There was significant difference between numbers of admission, and the factor of "unfavorable hospital diet". No difference of reported disturbance score between each two group classified by number of admission.
5) Number of patients in the room: There was significant difference between number of patients in the room and the factor of "poor interpersonal relationship" and the factor of "fear of death".
Patients in 2-person room were more disturbed of rest than patients in 3 or more person room by "poor interpersonal relationship". Patients in the two person room were more disturbed of rest by the factor of "fear of death".
6) Types of disease: There was significant difference between types of disease, and the factor of "fear of poor disease prognosis". No significant difference between
each two disease groups.
